Department Philosophy
The philosophy of the English as a Second Language and
Linguistics Department is to provide a student-centered
and encouraging environment for all students. Instructors
strive to facilitate meaningful language learning, provide
students with the tools necessary to become independent
language learners, and honor differences in learning
styles.
The ESL and Linguistics faculty recognize that students’
needs change as they develop their language skills.
At the beginning level, instructors attempt to make
students comfortable using their new language by offering
many opportunities to practice listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. At the intermediate and
advanced levels, instructors expect students to take
more responsibility for their learning. At all
levels, the ESL and Linguistics faculty use the cooperative
approach to learning.
