“ I often tell people I have the greatest job in the world. I come to work every day knowing I can change someone’s life. How great is that?”

Pat Wenthold
Coordinator
Harper College Writing Center

Any college must be fiscally responsible. But Harper believes greater responsibilities walk through our doors every morning. When the State of Illinois suddenly cut a $210,000 grant that supported our Writing Center and other tutoring programs, we quickly found a way to keep these important programs going. It would have been easy to order a closed sign and post it on the front door, but five straight years of balanced budgets meant we could reallocate our resources when it mattered most. To look at our financial performance, flip the page. To see what the numbers add up to, look at a student like Nancy Starkie.

“ Closing the Writing Center would have been devastating. When I thought about giving up, the tutors gave me the encouragement to go on.”
