A scholarship fund for interpreting students has been established at Harper College. The Jacob and Iris Wolf Sign Language Interpreting Scholarship was set up with the assistance of Dr. Harvey Wolf in memory of his father. The fund is a living testament to Jacob Wolf's commitment to challenged individuals and to Iris Wolf's belief that one has to always give back for the good fortune received in life.

Harvey Wolf is a psychologist who works with terminally ill patients, some of whom are Deaf. In his earlier years he worked at Harper College as a sign language interpreter and was awarded certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Dr. Wolf recently returned to Harper to take classes in the Sign Language Interpreting Program.

The scholarship is available for students enrolled in the Sign Language Interpreting Program and will allow deserving students to receive financial support as they pursue their professional goals.

Congratulations to Peggy Weaver, who received the scholarship for the 1999-2000 academic year. Ms. Weaver was recognized at a luncheon and had this to say:

"Now that I'm nearing the end of my coursework, I have a healthy respect for how much more there is to learn, but a strong sense that studying at Harper was the right thing to do, and good will come of it. So I'd like to say thank you to my teachers - Vicki Gratzke, Amy Dixon-Kolar, Bob Paul, Joan Fiske, and Sally Koziar for sharing your wisdom and experience. You are all very different people with different styles and beliefs, but your diversity reflects the diversity we will face in the Deaf and interpreting communities.

This summer I'd like to test for the transliteration portion of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf exam. With more time and practice I hope to become certified on the interpretation portion. I'd like to find a master's program related to ASL or interpreting and continue improving my skills. But regardless of any certificates or degrees I may earn, my goal is to be as wise as the Wolf family. To have the dedication of the late Mr. Jacob Wolf and work tirelessly for the good of all people. To have the generosity of Mrs. Iris Wolf who believes we must always give back for the good fortune we receive in life. To have the humility of Dr. Harvey Wolf who has a Ph.D. after his name, but does not put himself above others and never stops learning. I thank you for sharing your good fortune with the students and staff at Harper College and wish you many blessings in return."

Ann Hamel, was the first recipient of the Jacob and Iris Wolf Sign Language Interpreting Scholarship. In a letter, Ms. Hamel wrote:

"My enrollment in the Sign Language Interpreting Program at Harper College is an extension of my lifelong dream to learn sign language. It was not until adulthood that I began to realize that dream and started taking classes. I am now a full time SLIP student taking two classes a semester. I have been impressed and encouraged by the experiences I have had at Harper. The high caliber of the faculty, curriculum and the language lab has exceeded my expectations.
