CIS 119 Microsoft Image Composer Tutorial
Creating a Company Logo image
A "logo" image is commonly found on the home page of most web sites. When creating a web site for a company, it is easiest to scan the organization's logo from their brochures or promotional material and then save the scanned logo image as a gif or jpg file. If there are no brochures or other materials available, Microsoft Image Composer can be used to create a logo image.
Launch Microsoft Image Composer from the application program menu. Your screen should look similar to the image shown below.

The logo you will create will contain an image and company name. Choose a clip art image by clicking on the Insert menu and clicking on Clip Art. The standard Clip Art dialog box appears, choose an image appropriate for a music company. Once you select your clip art, the Microsoft Image Composer window should look similar to:

The size of your graphic will vary depending which clip art you choose. Drag your image to the upper right hand corner of the "white rectangle" located in the Image Composer window. Our final logo will need to fit in the "white" rectangle shown on the middle of the Image Composer window. Notice that the graphic I chose happens to be quite large and will need to be resized by clicking on a corner and dragging the mouse towards the graphic center. If your image is larger than one quarter of the "white rectangle", resize your graphic.

The "dotted" vertical and horizontal lines indicate the size of the final image. You can move them by dragging them with your mouse. Drag the lower horizontal line up to the bottom of your graphic.

Add a "Drop Shadow" Effect to the image by: Click on the Tools entry on the menu bar, choose Effects, a dialog box appears, slide the scroll bar to the right until the "Drop Shadow" effect is visible, double-click on the "Drop Shadow" effect, close the Effects dialog box.

Next add the company's name. The name of our music company is "Replay Music". Click on the
A icon on the left hand column of the screen. The text dialog box will appear.

Draw a rectangle by dragging your mouse. Change the text size to 24. Change the font type to "Bimini" or other type of your choice. Change the font style to "Bold". Click once inside the text box area, and type "Replay Music". The result is shown below.

Close the dialog box. Feel free to drag and resize the text box inside the "white rectangle" so that it is next to the clip art image and the result is appealing.

Now, drag the right vertical "dotted" line so that it is close to the right edge of your new logo.

We need to save our image for the web as a transparent gif. During this process, you can select whether the web page that will contain this image has a colored background or has a graphical background. We will save our image to be shown on a page with a white background.
Click on File. Click on Save for the Web. A Save for the Web Wizard appears, click Next and the wizard continues. The following dialog box is shown:

Make sure the radio button on the left is clicked (this creates a transparent image and lets the background show) and click Next. On the following dialog box select white as your background color and click Next. Click Save. Save the file on your a: drive with a file extension of gif.
Congratulations!
You have created your first "logo" image. If you have time, experiment with Image Composer. There are many effects and features that will allow you to turn stock clip art into interesting graphics.
