Classes at Harper 

What kind of knowledge is required to pass the certification exams?

Visit the official Microsoft Office Specialist website to get an idea of what knowledge the different exams require. For example, a click on the Requirements for Microsoft Office Specialist and a click on the desired exam, Microsoft Word 2002 Core Exam for example, will display exam objectives.

Microsoft Word 2002 Core Exam Objectives: 
Working with Text:
  • Use the Undo, Redo, and Repeat command
  • Apply font formats (Bold, Italic and Underline)
  • Use the Spelling feature
  • Use the Thesaurus feature
  • Use the Grammar feature
  • Insert page breaks
  • Highlight text in document
  • Insert and move text
  • Cut, Copy, Paste, and Paste Special using the Office Clipboard
  • Copy formats using the Format Painter
  • Select and change font and font size
  • Find and replace text
  • Apply character effects (Superscript, Subscript, Strikethrough, Small Caps and Outline)
  • Insert date and time
  • Insert symbols
  • Create and apply frequently used text with AutoCorrect
 

 

What Harper classes help prepare for Microsoft Office Specialist certification?

A variety of Harper College Computer Information Systems (CIS, CAS) and Administrative Technology (OFC) classes help prepare students to take Microsoft Ofice Specialist exams. 

Following are classes available at Harper College that will aid you with  Microsoft Office Specialist certification: 

 Word Certification

CAS 110 – Word Core Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
Prerequisites: CIS125, OFC134 or equivalent knowledge or consent of coordinator.   Continue the development of Word skills and focus on the review of these skills in preparation for the Word Core Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam.
CAS 210 – Word Expert Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
Prerequisites: CIS125, OFC201 or equivalent knowledge or consent of coordinator.   Concentrate on advanced Word skills and focus on the review of these in preparation for the Word Expert Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam.

 Excel Certification

CAS 120 – Excel Core Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
Prerequisites: CIS123, OFC205 or equivalent knowledge or consent of coordinator.   Continue the development of Excel skills and focus on the review of these skills in preparation for the Excel Core Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam. 
CAS 220 – Excel Expert Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
Prerequisites: CIS124, OFC205 or equivalent knowledge or consent of coordinator.   Concentrate on advanced Excel skills and focus on the review of these skills in preparation for the Excel Expert Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam. 

Access Certification

CAS 130 – Access Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
Prerequisites: CIS122, OFC225 or equivalent knowledge or consent of coordinator.   Continue the development of Access skills and focus on the review of these skills in preparation for the Access Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam. 

PowerPoint Certification

CAS 140 – PowerPoint Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
Prerequisites: CIS126, OFC202 or equivalent knowledge or consent of coordinator.   Continue the development of PowerPoint skills and focus on the review of these skills in preparation for the PowerPoint Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam. 

Outlook Certification

CAS 160 – Outlook Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
Prerequisites: None   Focuses on the review of Outlook skills in preparation for the Outlook Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam.

Pre-registration is required.  To register for a class (including the exam) contact the Registrar's Office at (847) 925-6500.  When registering you must indicate that you are registering for a late starting class if you register after the beginning of the semester.
