Systems analysts plan data processing systems
to meet business, scientific, or engineering needs. They examine
organizational needs or existing data processing systems and analyze
alternative methods. When they have completed their research they
will select the equipment capable of performing the job and prepare
instructions for programmers. Some system analysts will work through
the entire project also doing the computer programming for the
project. A detailed description of the job of system analyst can
be found in the Occupational
Outlook Handbook.
Many system analysts are promoted from programmer
and other positions within a company. A bachelor’s degree with
experience or course work in computer languages and technical
concepts is preferred by most organizations. Some scientific or
engineering positions may require a graduate degree. Business
employers usually prefer applicants with a bachelors degree with
courses in accounting, business administration or economics in
addition to experience or course work in computer languages and
concepts.
