Landscape Imagined,
Oil on canvas, 50" x 70”, 2004

Cuban-born painter Paul Sierra came to the United States in 1961 at age 16. Memories of his native country’s lush tropical landscape routinely suffuse his paintings. Usually a single figure is posed enigmatically to spark a narrative.   The dreamlike moods of his paintings are in the tradition of Magic Realism, a kind of painting that infuses ordinary events with a supernatural quality. In Sierra’s sometimes mural-sized paintings, a vibrant, pulsating palette applied in thick individual brushstrokes animates this quality.

Sierra’s mysterious scenes and expressionistic surfaces are designed to stir the emotions and imagination of their viewers.

Numerous galleries in Chicago, Miami and Atlanta represent Sierra. His work has been exhibited from coast to coast in the United States and collected by numerous institutions and museums such as the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian, Washington D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Rolli Foundation Museum, Uruguay.

Lexicon is a collaborative project that was produced by two artists living in different states over the course of a year via U. S. mail. It comprises 100 images on individual 5 x 7 inch papers. Each image is delicately layered, superimposing words, diagrams and representations to exquisite effect. Lexicon is a traveling exhibit and has been shown in Chicago at the Chicago Cultural Center and at the Northern Illinois University gallery. Harper is proud to host this extraordinary exhibit.

“As partners, we took turns alternating the role of initiator and respondent. Individual pieces traveled back and forth between Georgiana’s studio in Portland, Oregon and mine at that time in Chicago. During these transactions, the image’s direction was sensed more than planned, and worked on rather intuitively by either party until we felt it to be complete. Both of us contributed to each of the paintings along the way. The synergy of evolving images became a compelling dialogue, a relationship of discovery that taught us the language of the other, as well as reflecting back the sound of our own artistic voices.”
