Entrance & Audition Requirements
An audition, interview, or the consent of the instructor is required for all Harper College Music Department performing ensembles and applied lessons. Requirements vary, depending upon the specific ensemble and instrument. Individuals should contact the Music Department at 847/925-6568, for specific audition and entrance requirements. Auditions and interviews are held prior to the start of each semester.

Large Ensembles

Concert Choir
Thomas Stauch, Conductor
This choir is a select mixed ensemble of 40 voices which performs a wide variety of repertoire. This choir presents concerts every semester and participates in the annual Illinois ACDA Choral Festival for two-year colleges and special ACDA clinics and workshops. The choir frequently tours internationally.
Audition required.

Festival Chorus
Edwin Kemp, Conductor
This chorus of more than 140 members provides a singing opportunity for Harper College students and residents of the community who enjoy the challenge and experience of performing quality music. The chorus presents two concerts per year featuring major choral works as well as lighter musical literature. A professional orchestra and soloists are hired to assist in these performances.
Auditions are not required for membership in this chorus.

Wind Symphony
Gregory Clemons, Conductor
The Wind Symphony at Harper College, a select wind and percussion ensemble ranging from 30 to 70 players, is open to all Harper students (regardless of major emphasis), faculty, staff and the community. The Wind Symphony's flexible instrumentation allows it to perform music of various styles written for the wind ensemble, symphonic band, concert band and chamber winds. Symphony Orchestra
Frank Winkler, Conductor
The Harper Symphony Orchestra has performed in the northwest suburban area for 28 years. The orchestra members include professional players, members of the community and college students. The orchestra is comprised of strings, winds, and percussion and performs a series of six concerts each year.
Audition for winds by appointment. Strings auditioned by successful participation in rehearsal.

 

Small Ensembles

Camerata Singers
Thomas Stauch, Conductor
A select mixed voice chamber ensemble of 16-18 voices, the Camerata Singers perform a repertoire from all style periods with particular emphasis on the a
cappella repertoire. The Camerata performs frequently in a variety of campus and community venues as well as ACDA events.
Audition required.

Guitar Ensemble
Steven Vazquez, Conductor
The guitar ensemble is a small orchestra of guitarists. Music is arranged in such a way that guitarists become aware of their role and responsibility within an ensemble. Repertoire ranges from Dowland to Bach to the Beatles.
No audition is required. Students should have completed either class guitar or one semester of private lessons at Harper College.

Jazz Band
Gregory Clemons, Conductor
A traditional big band which performs a wide range of musical styles in a series of concerts each year, the jazz band regularly participates in a number of community events. Soloists and guest bands are often featured. For additional information, click here.

Piano Ensemble
Janice Razaq, Conductor
A unique ensemble experience for advanced pianists, the piano ensemble explores and performs duets, trios, concerto repertoire, and music for two pianos, eight hands. Emphasis is placed on ensemble techniques, sight reading, and performance techniques for a wide variety of piano ensemble literature.
Audition required.

Steel Band
Paul Ross, Conductor
Consisting of 15 hand-hammered 55 gallon barrels with drum set and percussion, the ensemble includes beginning and advanced groups. No musical experience is necessary to join the beginning group. The advanced group performs for special occasions, festivals and parades about 20 times a year.
