- The
Circulation Desk is located on the first floor
of the Academic Resource Center (Building F).
- Borrowing
privileges are extended to all Harper students,
staff and district
residents.
Course
Reserves
Material is placed on
Reserve by instructors to assure its availability
and accessibility for class use. Reserve items
may be borrowed by Harper students, faculty
and staff. Items
on reserve may include:
- Library
material.
- Reprints
(The Library is not responsible for these items).
- Instructor's
additional material (The Library is not responsible
for these items).
- Some
items are on reserve to prevent loss.
The
loan periods of Reserve materials are
- 2
hours: Materials are signed out for that period
and are usually for Room Use Only.
- Overnight
Materials
circulate for one day including the day the
item is checked out. The following day is the
due date.
- 3
days: Materials circulate for three days including
the day the item is checked out, the following
day, and the third day, which is the due date.

1 week: Materials circulate for seven days from
the day checked out.
- Electronic:
Materials are accessible through the online
catalog.
Limitations
- Reserve
material may not be renewed.

Faculty, staff, and administrators are required
to adhere to reserve loan periods and restrictions.
Procedure
for Putting Items on Reserve for Teachers
- Collect
the materials you want to put on reserve and
bring them with you when you submit your Reserve
request
- Please
remember that your students may not be the only
patrons who wish to use items on a particular
topic. We ask that you do not to put every item
the Library owns, on a subject, on Reserve.
- You
may place your own materials on reserve, provided
that that it does not violate copyright law.

Fill out the reserve item form available at
the circulation desk or at U:\Forms\LRC\reserve
items.pub. Form
- Items
gathered for reserve can usually be processed
and given a status of "Reserve"
within 24 hours of the Library's receiving it.
Procedure
for Putting Items on Electronic Reserve for Teachers
- Collect
the materials or citations you want to put on
electronic reserve.

You may place your own materials on electronic
reserve, provided that it does not violate copyright
law. For non-library items, or items not
currently available through the library databases,
faculty will need to show fair
use compliance or a letter of permission
to use the items electronically.

Fill out the reserve item form available at
the circulation desk, or via the U drive. (U:\Forms\LRC\ereserves.rtf)
Email the form to Chris
Ternes, or drop it off at the Library Checkout
desk.

The library will check citations for online
availability, download, scan and post them in
the Library Catalog Course Reserves section.

The Library is not responsible for procuring
an electronic or hard copy when the item is
not currently available trough the Library databases.
The faculty can obtain a copy via Interlibrary
Loan.

Items gathered for reserve can usually be processed
and given a status of "Reserve"
within 48 hours of the Library's receiving it.

Confidentiality
The
Harper College Library is dedicated to the principle
of free access and flow of all information and
material to our patrons. We regard the reason
and rationale of material use a private matter.
Library records are for the sole purpose of protecting
public property and are not to be used directly
or indirectly to identify the types of materials
or services used by individual Library patrons.
The
efforts of any outside agency to obtain any circulation
records, patron lists, or information about a
patron will be considered an invasion of privacy.
Such an attempt will also be viewed as a violation
of the principles of academic freedom.
Any
individual or agency attempting to obtain information
concerning Library patrons should be referred
immediately to the circulation person in charge
who will discuss the matter with the Library Dean.
Under no circumstance will information be provided
without a warrant. Moreover, any costs incurred
by the Library in any such search through patron
Library records, even under court order, shall
be chargeable to the agency demanding such a search.
The above pertains until contrary legislation
is enacted.

Lost
Material The
Harper College Library charges $40, plus an additional
$10 nonrefundable processing fee for each lost
item, regardless of Harper employee status. If
the item's value exceeds $40.00 you will be charged
the current replacement cost of the item.
The
Library charges $50 for lost leased books, plus
an additional $10 nonrefundable processing fee,
regardless of Harper employee status.
The
nonrefundable processing fee includes cataloging
the item and updating the item record in the Library
database.
Phone
Inquires
Library patrons who provide their name, Library
card number and address, can receive the following
information: The
number of items and titles on loan.
The
title of a requested item when it becomes available.
Outstanding
charges on the record.
No
other information regarding a patron's Library
record will be given over the telephone.
Photocopying
The Library houses 3 photocopiers for patrons' use. Copies are
10¢ with a purchased copy card or 15¢ with
cash. There is a color copier that is $1.00 with
a purchased copy card or $1.25 with cash. A limited
amount of change is available at the Circulation
Desk.
Renewals
Students and community borrowers may renew materials
for the original loan periods, except for some reserve
items, videos and DVD's, which are non-renewable.
Faculty
and Staff materials may be renewed, after returning
materials at the end of term. Faculty and Staff
may only renew videos and DVDs for an additional
week.
Any
item with a pending request may not be renewed.
Renewing
Materials Online. Students can renewal material
online.
From the Library homepage click on "Library
Catalog"
Click on "My Account"
Enter your Library borrower ID and last name
Check the boxes next to the items for renewal
Click "Renew Items"
Be sure to note the extended loan period.
