Online Resources For Harper Students of English 101 and Speech 101: Researching Current, Controversial Issues

Online Catalog - Click here to search our catalog for books and audiovisual materials in our collection.

We highly recommend the following books:

10,000 Ideas for Term Papers, Projects, Reports and Speeches - Found at the Harper College Library Reference Desk - please ask a reference librarian to see a copy. Browse through 10,000 topic ideas for your paper or speech - the book also indicates the level of difficulty of researching each topic.

The Taking Sides series of books - Found at Call # HN 5 .C56 1996 AND HN 5 .C52 1999. These books arrange controversial issues into broad subject categories and then provide numerous essays on each issue.

The Reference Shelf series of books - Found at Call # H 91 .R4 vol. _
Each volume discusses one controversial issue at length, and provides many different points of view on the subject.

The Opposing Viewpoints series of books - Found throughout the Main Stacks, shelved by subject category. Each volume discusses one controversial issue at length, and provides many different points of view on the subject. To find, do a "Keyword" search in the library catalog for "Opposing Viewpoints" (use quotation marks).

The CQ Researcher Online-The CQ Researcher explores a single "hot" issue in the news in depth each week. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology.

The Statistical Abstract of the United States - A Reference book, it may only be used within the Library. Found at Call # REF HA 202 .A2 2001. Up-to-date statistics on population, crime, illness, births, deaths, eating/drinking habits, spending habits, employment and many other categories. These statistics are gathered by the United States Federal government. A good statistic gets attention in a speech or term paper and adds credibility to your argument.

Newsbank - Click here, then choose from a variety of newspaper sources. For national and global topics, choose Newsbank Newsfile Collection. For a local flavor, try the Chicago Tribune, Daily Herald or the News Illinois database.
Ebscohost - Click here, then on "Academic Search Premier" or one of the other databases to find current magazine/journal articles and other resources.
World News Digest - A core of reference databases to answer questions about events, issues, statistics and people of the last
