The Harper Library Reference Collection has many excellent and helpful resources for the student of Shakespeare and his works. We recommend the following (but have many more Shakespeare resources in our collection):

Andrews, John F. William Shakespeare: His World - His Work - His Influence. 1985. CALL NUMBER = REF PR 2976 .W5354 1985. Three volume set. Detailed information on Shakespeare's writings, the world in which he lived and worked, and the people and events which influenced him.

Dominic, Catherine C. (ed.) Shakespeare's Characters for Students. 1997. CALL NUMBER = REF PR 2989 .S53 1997. Detailed portrayal of each character in the plays of Shakespeare. Excellent resource if you are writing a paper on one specific character or are comparing several characters.

Lanzen Harris, Laurie & Mark W. Scott. Shakespearean Criticism. 1984. CALL NUMBER = REF PR 2965 .S43 1984 Multi-volume set, new volumes are continually being added to the series. Reprinted articles of criticism taken from journals and books. The latest volume has a helpful "Topic Index by Play": find which volume speaks directly to your play and your theme or thesis statement.

Scott, Mark W. (ed.). Shakespeare for Students. 1992. CALL NUMBER = REF PR 2987 .S47 1992 and 1996 An overview of each play - plot, characters, themes and meanings. Literary technique and style are also discussed - some literary criticism is included.

Literary Reference Center - Includes more than 10,000 plot summaries, synopses and work overviews, 75,000 articles of literary criticism, 130,000 author biographies, full text of over 300 literary journals, 500,000 book reviews, 25,000 classic and contemporary poems, 11,000 classic and contemporary short stories, full text of over 7,500 classic novels (anticipated by Fall 2006), 3,000 author interviews, and over 1,000 images of key literary figures.

MLA - MLA International Bibliography is a bibliography of journal articles, books and dissertations. Produced by the Modern Language Association, the electronic version of the bibliography dates back to 1963 and contains over 1.7 million citations from more than 4,400 journals and series and 1,000 book publishers.

Literature Resource Center - An all-Literature database from the Gale Publishing Group. Search by Shakespeare as an Author or by Title of each play. Biographies, literary criticism, reviewed web sites and more. All full-text.

EBSCOhost- Choose the MLA database from the list. Search for Shakespeare's plays, characters, themes and imagery. Very little full-text, but extremely valuable for the student of Literature.
