About netLibrary Electronic Books

Harper College Library now provides access to over 1900 "eBooks" through our participation in the Illinois Digital Academic Library Consortia (IDAL) from netLibrary, Inc.  “eBooks” are fully searchable electronic versions of printed books that you can browse, search, borrow, read, and return over the Internet by setting up a netLibrary account. netLibrary is a leading provider of eBooks and Internet-based content/collection management services. Harper College Library may also choose to purchase additional eBooks directly from netLibrary or other vendors as needed.

How to Access Ebooks

Search the Harper College Online Library Catalog. You can find the netLibrary eBooks that Harper owns by doing a keyword search in the online Catalog for “netlibrary.” If you’re doing research on a specific topic, type in your subject and add “netlibrary” to the search to see if there are any relevant eBooks: business and netlibrary. Click on the URL in the catalog record to connect to the specific netLibrary title.

Searching directly on the netLibrary home page

Start your search in one of two places

The Keyword Search box is located at the top right of your browser window on the main navigation bar. A keyword search allows you to search for a word or phrase in the title, author, Library of Congress subject heading, publisher, and ISBN fields. To perform a keyword search, enter the search term. Note: To do a phrase search, submit your search in quotes – for example, “small business.” Click the Go button to display search results.

You can also perform a more advanced search in the Search this eBook Collection section, at the top left of the home page. Fill in any or all of the fields that appear on the home page including title, author, subject, keywords, full text, publisher, pub year, and ISBN. Note: To do a phrase search, submit your search in quotes – for example, “small business.” Click the red Search button to display search results.

How to set up a netLibrary account

1. You can enter http://www.netlibrary.com/ from the Harper Library Articles Indexes and Databases web page and choosing the netLibrary link from the list of databases.

2. Click the Create an Account link.

3.   Enter your identifying information (user name, password, email address).

4.   Select the Submit button.

You have the option to add titles to My Favorites, a stored list that allows you to access titles at a later time without doing another search. Just select the box to the left of each title and click the red Add button.

Browsing an eBook

You may browse an eBook without logging in. Browsing an eBook is the equivalent of taking a book off the shelf and looking through it. While you are actively using it, no other user will have access to it. If 15 minutes elapses without active use, the eBook is “put back on the shelf” and another user will have access.

How to browse an eBook

1. Search for an eBook.

2. Select the eBook title from your search results list. The eBook Summary page is displayed.

3. Select the Browse this eBook Online link.

4. The eBook is displayed. If you have questions about using an eBook, the Help tab at the top of your screen offers helpful information.

Checking out an ebook

To check out an eBook, you must first log in. Checking out an eBook gives you exclusive use of the eBook for the checkout period determined by Harper College LIbrary. The eBook is automatically returned when the checkout period expires.
