One obvious physical difference between these two regions is that the countries of the mainland are contiguous and the countries of insular Southeast Asia are fragmented.. But the prorupt and elongated shapes of most of the mainland countries contribute to centrifugal forces which tend to divide the countries. This is also a common problem in the fragmented States of insular Southeast Asia.
