This web site links you to the IDOT, Illinois Department of Transportation. It is possible to access the Chicago Metro Area and view current road and expressway maps for weather conditions and especially traffic and or construction delays. Maps are updated 24 hours a day, every 10 minutes- so you can always be one step ahead of Chicago's Metro Area.

2. HISTORIC PHOTOS OF ILLINOIS FROM AIRPLANES.

A web site devoted to documenting Illinois through aerial photographs taken during the last 60 years. Can be used as informative and for fun to see your home, work area years before urbanization spread through the suburbs.

4. GEOGRAPHICAL WEATHER AND GLOBAL MONITORING FROM SPACE.

This web site contains mulitudes of maps, taken from space. The enviroment is heavily monitored on this web site, from tracking forest fires in Jarkarta to measuring pollen counts in your home town.

6. NASA SATELITE IMAGES OF THE EARTH.

This site is run by NASA, containing thousands of photographs of the world in which we live. Using JPL imaging this site devotes geography/ not to lines and man-made boundaries but it shows the natural boundaries of our world.

7. FODORS TRIP PLANNER FOR ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

This was a enjoyable web site, detailing hotels, places to eat and local customs of that area. You can enter your budget, where you might like to go and the Fodors web site does the rest. This site is for the serious traveller and can save you lots of time in researching places to visit in our geographic realm.

8. UNITED STATES STATE DEPARTMENT.

This web site is handled by the U.S. State Dept. For geographical health and medical related information on places you might or would not like to visit. his site is printed in the Sunday Tribune-advising you current world health- crisis areas and places to avoid due to political unrest or for health reasons.

9.VIRTUAL TOURS OF OUR WORLD.

This web site is for the serious person who doesn't like to leave his or her house. The Armchair Travel Company offers virtual travel to anywhere on the planet. I visited Israel and The United Kingdom from my home. You just type in the place you might like to visit and view thousands of beautiful and very detailed photographs.

10.JOHN R. BORCHERT MAP LIBRARY.

This award-winning web site is the product of the University of Minnesota. The site contains multiple pages of sites devoted to the history of cartography, with maps depicting history. I viewed the maps of the Pioneer Trails and learned quite a bit about the geography of the Pioneers routes and why they choose them.

This site is like having the entire collection of National Geographic magazines, and more, at your electronic fingertips. A plethora of articles, maps, country fact sheets, and photographs (including aerial views) are available here. There is even a National Geographic store!

A cartography buff's dream! This site offers access to an enormous variety of worldwide maps. This is also a good source for thematic maps, such as astronomy, climate, geology, geophysics and population.

 8. GEOGRAPHICAL SURVEY INSTITUTE - IBARAKI, JAPAN

This site illustrates to me the wide range of applications for geography. One assignment of the Geological Survey Institute of Ibaraki, Japan is to survey and map volcanic sites. Their work has become instrumental in the prediction of volcanic eruptions. Fascinating information on volcanos and volcano research is available here, as well as volcano photographs and movie clips. You can even consult a volcanologist.

9. WORLDWIDE FACT BOOK

You are transformed into an internet James Bond courtesy of this website, maintained by the CIA. Select a nation, and you are privy to information on such topics as geography, terrain, maritime claims, census (including birth rates, death rates, and life expectancy), defense, government, transportation, and communications. 10. INTERACTIVE ATLAS OF GREAT BRITAIN

This site provides customized atlas information for the United Kingdom (except Ulster, which is still under development). Simply enter the name or post code of your desired town (or, in London, you may even select a street name), and a map of the area appears. With the scale indicator, you are able to zoom in and out. Links to local weather information and local web sites are available. Now we can track our correspondant's whereabouts!

This is a cool site with lots of maps on different areas of the world. Has detailed maps of the middle east and even maps of Texas. But who really wants to see maps on Texas.     This is a very interesting site for me. I visited Lappland while in Finland and saw the reindeer running loose. At night you can hear the lead reindeer's bell clanking aroung it's neck. It is above the Arctic Circle and in the summer the sun shines at night.
