Provided by the Australian Embassy in Washington, DC, this site starts off with general information on the country and recent happenings. There is then a list of specific category links for more in-depth information, such as the economy, culture, flora and fauna, and geography and climate. The geography-climate link discusses the size of the continent, borders, elevation, climate (precipitation and vegetation), and various regions of this country. Much more info. too.

2) ICELAND

The homepage has an index which covers every topic regarding this interesting country which is located in the far North Atlantic Ocean. After the index, in-depth demographics of this unique island are listed. Everything from life expectancy to national religion are listed here. The general geographic and economic, government, and population information is also discussed.

3) PESHTIGO, WISCONSIN - Peshtigo Fire

The fire happened virtually simultaneously with the great Chicago fire, but was much less publicized. This fire was perhaps even greater than that more famous fire, and more devestating, killing hundreds and destroying the city of Peshtigo in an hour. There are a few sites on this fire and city in Wisconsin.

My interest in this country is because of a friend who is a native of this small country located in what is most often referred to as Central America. There is a variety of information contained in this site - from general information, culture and language, to a link of all the regions of Central America. You'll find maps as well as a people finder and the yellow pages.

5) AMAZONIA FROM SPACE

A very different site, but cool! This site lets you pick a section of Amazonia and enlarges the Landsat images (aerial views) of the geographic landscape, taken by the Brazilian Amazon Deforestation Survey Project in 1991. There is not much verbal information in this site, but this is a link from a homepage (http://www.cptec.inpe.br/lba) which is the Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment site in Amazonia used to understand functions (ecological, climatic, etc. ) of this region. There is also a tutorial link on Amazonia containing general geographic information on the region and more.

6) SOUTH AFRICA - Economic Trends and Outlook

A most informative site containing the economics of South Africa. There is information on economic growth, including mining and manufacturing, agriculture, and the new government. The outlook seems favorable for this region as a whole. The economy is examined fairly closely.

7) U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

Urban mapping and spatial analysis of land transformation due to urban development in the monthly feature (May 1997) of this site. The realm is North America and the site has many links such as geology, water resources, global land information, among many others.

8) HONG KONG

Mostly historical and political, but with Hong Kong's authority reverting back to China this year I felt this was somewhat appropriate. The agreement between Britain and China was made in 1984 and will have an enormous impact on the entire population, economy, and development of this island located in the East Asian Realm.

9) SUBSAHARAN AFRICA

Many links in this site provide you with information not only regarding Subsaharan Africa, but any country in Africa. There is a map you can click on to choose a country for information or click on the name which is listed next to the map. The information on the realm of Subsaharan Africa is located below this map and country listing. There is a two-part discussion which includes general information and a case study of Nigeria. Following are many listings of topics, facts, and probably opinion, and the publications or articles from which they come on the different countries and regions of this realm.
