Activity 2 introduces students to the distinction between basic and nonbasic goods and how to calculate and use a regional multiplier. Using the regional multipliers of Activity 2, students can assess the effects of regional restructuring on local economies.If you assign Activity 2, it is helpful to do the first question at the blackboard. Though the formula is simple (Et = k*Eb), some students may not remember rules of algebra whereby you plug numbers in and multiply or divide both sides of the equation by the same number.
