INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES and/or ADDITIONS TO TEXT READING
On page 215 the authors discuss modern genetic engineering. Those of us living in the Chicago suburbs learn very little about agriculture. I have been surprised several times recently when I heard about modern agricultureal methods. Two come to mind.
I grew up in norhtern Minnesota in a small agricultural community. On a recent visit home I discussed farming hith a former high school classmate. He told me that the genetically engineered seeds are patented so that farmers must buy their seeds from the company that invented it. this means that when they buy a genetically engineered seed they sign a contract that says that they will not keep any of their own crop to be used as seeds the following year.. This means that even though they grow the crop and the grain that they harvest are perfectly capable of being used as seeds, they cannot use them as seeds. They must buy their seeds for each crop from a seed company. He told me that the seed companies go out and inspect fields. If they see their plant growing in a field and that farmer did not buy seeds from them they can take the farmer to court.
Anotherdramatic change in American agriculture recently is the use of global position systems (GPS). Now farmers can survey the soil in their fields and enter all the data into a computer. For example, they find exacly where the soil is lacking in certain nutrients. They then connect this computer to their fertilizer machines and as they fertilize their field the machine will add different amounts of fertilizer in different areas of the field. This is being called "precision farming" .

ACTIVITY 2:
When doing activity 2 at your local supermarket be sure to bring questions 2.1 and 2.2 with you. You must record your observations while you are at the supermarket.
NOTE: You may be approached by the store manager who will ask you what you are doing. Stores try to discourage their competitors from knowing what prices they are charging. I'm sure if you simply tell the manager that you are doing an assignment for your geography class on the globalization of agriculture everything will be all right. In fact, don't be afraid to ask him/her for help!
ACTIVITY 3:
Be sure to refer to this map when doing the CD-ROM activity. It is important to know WHERE you are in a geography course.
Questions 3.3, 3.8, and 3.15:
Questions 3.3, 3.8, and 3.15 ask you to describe the "spatial pattern" where the change has taken pace. In previous exercises we have generally not done very well on describing "spatial patterns" . Describe WHERE the change took place. If the change occurred primarily in one or two certain tell me where those areas are. If the change you selected was not concentrated in certain areas, but was dispersed throughout the photo, then tell me that. Being MORE DESCRPTIVE is better than being less.
