REVIEW QUESTIONS - Sample Exam Questions
Use the Discussion Board if you have any questions about these review questions.

1. On the map above a large area is shown to speak a language from the Australian Family (#14). In fact, the area of these languages (#14) is larger than those where Polish or German is spoken. Explain why this is misleading? (You may have to RIGHT CLICK on the map and select VIEW IMAGE to get a more clear and legible map.)

2. Discuss the spatial diffusion of Christianity using examples of (1) relocation diffusion, (2) expansion diffusion, and (3) hierarchical diffusion. You may have to use chapter 3 of our main textbook.

3. What are some of the cultural barriers and physical barriers which impede the diffusion of languages? Give examples.

4. Define and explain the difference between Pidgins and Creoles using examples.

5. What is toponymy?

6. What is the difference between a lingua franca and an official language?

7. Map the basic pattern of World Religions on the map below.
Geography studies WHERE, WHY THERE, and WHY DO WE CARE? On the blank world map below show the locations of the worlds major religions. Do not just put "Catholic " in the northeastern part of North America, but rather you should draw the line between the Catholic areas and the Protestant areas. See the map below. The textbook uses different colors to show the different religion regions. You should be able to do this. I do not expect all the detail shown in the map below, but I do expect the general pattern.

Include:
  • Christianity
    • mostly Catholic
    • mostly Protestant
    • mostly Eastern Orthodox
  • Islam
    • Mostly Sunni
    • Mostly Shia
  • Buddhism
  • Hindu
  • Chinese faiths
  • Shinto
  • tribal religions
