Students with Other Disabilities

Services

Services and accommodations are available to students who may have a variety of disabilities, including blindness or vision impairment, chronic medical problems, psychological disabilities, traumatic head injury, a progressive illness, other orthopedic or physical disabilities or other health impairments.

Students can be assisted with an orientation to the campus, an identification of accessible features (elevators, lifts, level entry ways, accessible work stations/furniture, etc.), evaluation of requests for course or program modifications or substitutions or assistance in meeting off campus / field requirements that are associated with a course.

Blind and physically disabled students

An Instructional Specialist, Beth Krueger, is available to assist you in choosing your courses and planning for access and accommodations. Evaluation of the physical layout of a classroom/lab may occur as well as evaluating the course requirements. Students may also be assisted with
  1. Securing necessary accommodations, such as:
    • Notetaking assistance
    • Having materials converted into accessible formats, i.e. Braille
    • Having a reader or scribe assist with exams
    • Using a computer or assistive technology on campus
    • Setting up testing/exam accommodations
    • Coordinating resources available from external/community agencies or organizations - Office of Rehabilitation Services
Psychological disabilities and chronic medical conditions
A full-time and a part-time counselor, Bill Hengtgen and Marcie Sacks-Botto, are available to assist students in choosing courses and planning for access and accommodations. They can provide personal support and guidance in managing the demands of college, along with medical care and other responsibilities. Students may also be assisted with:
  1. Securing necessary accommodations such as: Setting up testing/exam accommodations
  2. Dealing with missed classes due to illness
  3. Dealing with the stresses associated with a chronic medical or psychological condition
  4. Securing personal counseling and medical assistance
Temporary disabilities
Students who have experienced a temporary disability such as a broken arm or leg may receive limited assistance such as a notetaker while they are recovering from an accident or surgery. Inquiries about such assistance should be made in the ADS office, D119, or by phone at 847.925.6266.
