Anorexia nervosa is a type of eating disorder identified by an obsession for thinness, generally sought through self-starvation. Dr. W. Steward Agraras describes it as a "relatively rare disorder characterized by marked weight loss (at least 15 percent below ideal body weight), an intense fear of gaining weight, disturbance in the experience of the body shape (i.e., feeling fat in the face of marked weight loss), and (in females) amenorrhea (lack of menstruation)."
