The Harper College Writing Center

Mission and Description

Mission

The Writing Center provides an instructional environment conducive to creative and academic work. Professional staff and modern technology combine to support computer-assisted and traditional writing instruction, and to advance the developing skills of student writers of all levels and in all disciplines.

Description

Forming the literal "center" of the computer lab complex on the third floor of The Academic Resource Center, The Writing Center supports a wide array of opportunities for those engaged in the teaching, learning, and practice of writing and reading in an electronic environment.

Computer Classrooms

Computer classrooms may be scheduled for regular use or on an as needed basis. Faculty from the Liberal Arts and Academic Enrichment and Language Studies Divisions are given priority in scheduling. Instructors may consult with professional writing specialists and technical assistants to schedule in-class orientations, assist in classroom activities, and discuss aspects of computer-assisted writing instruction.

Workshop Atmosphere

Harper writers may work in the supportive environment of the open writing lab where they receive instructional guidance and technical assistance as they compose, organize, and edit a variety of written documents. Students, instructors, and staff often work side-by-side, consulting about writing projects and reading each other's work.

Continuing Education and Tutoring Services

For those who need more intensive help and review, continuing education courses are offered in grammar and punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary. For more information on these courses, contact Lynn Secrest, the AE/LS Continuing Education Coordinator, at 847.925.6119. Additionally, the Tutoring Center offers private tutoring sessions by appointment and on a walk-in basis. Contact the Tutoring Center at extension 847.925.6539 for more information.
