Review - Introduction - Plate Tectonics

[Return to Introduction Review Page]

The boundaries of the earth's crustal plates coincide with the earths mountain chains, trenches, rift valleys, earthquakes, and volcanoes. There are four types of plate boudaries:

  1. divergent
  2. convergent
  3. transform
  4. plate boundary zones

Look at the figures that follow and state which type of boundary is being illustrated.

For the lecture on plate tectonics go here.

You should be able to use the theory of plate tectonics to understand the locations of the world's mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes. use the maps below to review. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

You should also have an understanding of the evidence that supports the theory of plate tectonics.
