ANSWERS

Measures of Economic Development

Use this data for the hypothetical country of Harperland to answer the questions that follow.

  1. Calculate the GDP per capita for Harperland
GDP per capita - GDP / population
    GDP per capita = $375,000,000 / 1,000,000
    GDP per capita = $ 375
  2. About how many years will it take for the population of Harperland to double?
    # years to double = 70 / annual growth rate
    # years to double = 70 / 2
    # year to double = 35 years
  3. Would this country be classified as a less developed country (LDC) or a more developed country (MDC)? Give three reasons why based on the data available.
    LDC because:
    • GDP per capita = $373. This is very low
    • urbanization = 25%. This is very low
    • annual population growth rate = 2%. This is a little high
