Art Exhibition Shows Faculty Talent

Harper College Art Professor Jason Peot likes to create art that is site-specific - that is, art that interacts with the space in which it is created and displayed. For this year's Faculty Art Exhibition, he's taken that a step further and has created a piece that isn't just being displayed at Harper - it's actually about Harper, too.

Peot, who teaches Sculpture and Design at the College, will be showing a piece he created this summer that was inspired by Harper: a two-dimensional drawing overlaid with elements of sand-blasted plexiglass that incorporates Harper's campus map.

Fourteen full-time and adjunct art faculty at the Harper College will exhibit their work in the bi-annual Faculty Art Exhibition, on display now in the Art Exhibition Space, C200, Building C on the College's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. The free exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m and will close on September 26.

The exhibit will feature photography, sculpture, print pieces and more - all forms that represent the kinds of classes offered at the College.

"My hope is that the pieces reflect what each faculty member does as an artist, but also what they teach," said Peot, who also acts as curator of the Faculty Exhibition. "It's beneficial to the students to see that the people that teach their classes actually practice what they preach. It gives them some context to see where they are coming from as instructors and as artists."

Photography instructor Charlie Roderick is presenting a photo piece called "Helicopter," which shows a grounds-eye view of a distant helicopter in the hopes that it will generate any number of emotional responses.

"We want people to get a sense of what our faculty creates as practitioners in their field," Roderick said. "This may help students who would like to know what they can expect from taking courses in the Art department."
