Harper College is celebrating Latine Heritage Month through October 15 with a range
of events that celebrate different facets of Latine culture. Also known as National
Hispanic Heritage Month, this time is dedicated to recognizing the heritage of Latine
Americans and the many ways Latine Americans have shaped the U.S.
Harper is proud of its status as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), a designation from the U.S. Department of Education, with Latine students making up approximately 30% of the college’s enrollment.
All Latine Heritage Month programming is free and will take place on Harper’s Palatine campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road. Events include:
Harper Fiesta, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, Outdoor Pavilion. Geared to prospective Harper students and their families, the event features music, dance and games, along with representatives from Admissions Outreach and PASO to help with the enrollment process. Register and learn more here.
Sabor Latino – The Forgotten Americans: Puerto Rico and the History of its Music, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 24, Performing Arts Center. This annual Harper tradition will feature music from Puerto Rican music from AfriCaribe. Co-presented by the Harper Department of Music, Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Latinos Unidos, the concert is open to the community. Learn more.
From Venezuela to Chicago: The History of Mass Migration, 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, Building E, Room E108. Antonio Ramirez, associate professor of history at Elgin Community College, will draw from oral histories of migrants to explore the circumstances that brought tens of thousands of Venezuelans to Chicago. Refreshments will be provided and the event is open to the community.
Cine Latino, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesdays through October 21, Film Lab, Building E, Room E109. A subset of Harper’s Fall Film Series, Cine Latino shows movies from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. Presented by Harper’s Department of Mass Communications, screenings are open to the community. See the full schedule here.
