Woodwinds Auditions

Woodwind applicants wishing to enroll in the Associate of Fine Arts Degree in Music program may be accepted for study in the Department of Music at one of three levels:

  • 200 Woodwind Major
  • 100 Non-major
  • Woodwind as a Secondary Instrument

Alternatively, students may be referred to the College's Continuing Education (non-credit) music program for further instruction.

Requirements

See the main Auditions page for important information about all auditions. Woodwind auditions require demonstration of basic skills for all winds: posture, embouchure, and understanding music notation. Additionally (by instrument):

Flute

  1. Perform scales (two octaves) from two sharps to two flats and chromatic scale.
  2. Perform exercises in C,G,D,F and B-flat from Rubank Advanced Method Book, Vol. I.
  3. One movement from the following (or of comparable or greater difficulty): Sonata in B-flat (G.P. Telemann), Sonata No.4 (J.S. Bach), Sonata in G, Op. 19, No.1 (J. Boismortier).

Oboe

  1. Perform scales (one octave) from two sharps to two flats and chromatic scale.
  2. Perform exercises in C,G,D,F and B-flat from Rubank Advanced Method Book, Vol. I.
  3. One movement from the following (or of comparable or greater difficulty): Sonata in B-flat (C. Tessarini); Concerto No.1 in B-flat (G.F. Handel); Concerto in F, Op. 7, No.9 (T. Albinoni).

Clarinet

  1. Perform scales (one octave) from two sharps to two flats and chromatic scale.
  2. Perform exercises in C,G,D,F and B-flat from Rubank Advanced Method Book, Vol. I.
  3. One movement from the following (or of comparable or greater difficulty): Concerto No.3 in B-flat (K. Stamitz); Concerto No.3 in B-flat (J. Molter); Concerto in E-flat, Op.120, No.2 (F. Krommer); or Fantasy-Pieces, Op.73 (R. Schumann).

Bassoon

  1. Perform scales (two octaves) from two sharps to two flats and chromatic scale.
  2. Perform exercises in C,G,D,F and B-flat from Rubank Advanced Method Book, Vol. I.
  3. One movement from the following (or of comparable or greater difficulty): Sonata in B-flat, K.292(W.A. Mozart); Concerto in F (K. Stamitz); or Sonata in F minor (G.P. Telemann).

Saxophone

  1. Perform all 12 major scales (one or two octaves as practical)
  2. Perform one slow and one fast etude from Selected Studies, (H. Voxman), 48 Studies (F. Ferling) or a comparable book.
  3. Repertoire chosen from (or of comparable or greater difficulty):Romance (William Grant Still), Dance (D. Milhaud), Tableaux de Provence (Paule Maurice) or Aria (Eugene Bozza).
