FICTION WRITERS WORKSHOP: NOVELS AND SHORT STORY ANTHOLOGIES (LLA 035): Are you ready to take your draft novel or short story to the next level? You will receive verbal feedback on one story or novel chapter of up to 5,000 words and begin editing to create chapter beginnings and endings that will keep readers engaged. You will learn how to develop an appropriately sized cast of characters, plots, subplots and action, and how to tackle continuity of locations, characters and names. Finally, you will discuss working with editors, beta-readers, agents and how to self-publish.
FINISH YOUR NOVEL WORKSHOP (LLA 0235): Writers who have begun a novel are invited to present and get feedback from others in the same boat! Discuss elements of your novel, engage in group writing exercises, and experience the encouragement to get that unfinished masterpiece back on track! We will also briefly look at the process of preparing your manuscript for submission to agents and publishers. Students are to bring some materials to first class - the latest printed version of their novel, a list of chapters, and a 1-2 page synopsis.
WRITE A NOVEL IN 30 DAYS WORKSHOP: THE NANOWRIMO CHALLENGE (LLA 0248): Writing a novel is a momentous achievement that can take years of work. National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenges you to create your first draft in thirty days. Is this possible? Yes! Every year, authors meet the challenge. Many turn their NaNoWriMo drafts into published books. Take the express route to achieving your authoring dreams with this accelerated novel workshop. We will review novel elements, participate in group critiques, experiment with creative writing exercises, and take advantage of in-class novel writing time. From novel planning, to writing, to next steps, this class will help you reach your goal.
NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH (NANOWRIMO) COME WRITE IN (LLA 0249): We'll help you complete your NaNoWriMo writing challenge by providing an open classroom for you to use on Friday nights and Saturday mornings throughout November. Bring your laptop (free Wifi available) or pen and paper and use our space to add to your word count. This open, non-instructional workspace is available to you free of charge. NaNoWriMo 2018 dates TBA.
Please note, not all courses are offered every semester.
