Library Instruction

The Harper College Library is committed to providing tools to help students find materials and conduct research. The library offers course-related classes and tutorials designed to teach students about print and online resources and information access. Library instruction classes, taught by qualified librarians, aim to encourage lifelong learning as well as academic discovery.

Harper College Library also provides resources to help our distance learning students access materials from the library. This section will provide guides on how to use these resources to help you become acquainted with the library and all we have to offer.

Please use our online form if you would like to schedule a class.

What is Library Instruction?

Library instruction is a means to help students with their success regarding research skills. Some of the basic skills students should attain through library instruction include:

  • Ability to locate and identify basic library services such as: reference desk, circulation services, etc.
  • Ability to locate and use the library research tools such as the library catalog, electronic databases, print materials such as the reference collection and the main stacks.
  • Retrieve information from a variety of library systems.

These skills are presented to students based on their skill level, curriculum, assignment, available resources and time.

The (Interim) Coordinator of Library Instruction

The interim coordinator of library instruction works with faculty to schedule and organize library sessions. If you have questions about the library instruction program or wish to schedule a class, the coordinator will be happy to talk with you to make sure your students’ learning needs are met.

Library Instruction Sessions

Library instruction sessions are generally in F220, F221 or even your classroom.

To schedule a library instruction session for your class, please contact us no later than one week in advance. This will allow the librarian scheduled to teach your session enough time to prepare and to ensure that your preferred time is available. All of our classes are taught by professional librarians/faculty members who are happy to work with you in order to create a worthwhile library instruction experience.

You will be contacted within 3 days to confirm your requested time and date. Please do not assume that a class is automatically scheduled until you have been contacted by the library.

Time slots fill up quickly! Our busiest times are the first two months of each semester. We also strongly recommend that instructors attend the library session with their students; this emphasizes the importance of research to your students.
