After serving in the U.S. Army, Phyllis Higgins found that her career options were
limited without a college degree. On the Harper Talks podcast – in which Harper College
alumni share their education, career and life journeys – the military veteran discusses
how a good friend pointed her to Harper’s Fast Track program, which offers accelerated learning for adult students.
“You’re taking classes in a cohort-type fashion. You’re all going through the same classes together, which is good. It helps you build those relationships, that network,” she said. “It was a good experience because everybody was similar to me, … working full-time jobs and trying to figure out what their next step in life was going to be.”
Upon graduating from Harper in 2010, Phyllis’s next step was a bachelor’s degree in management from National Louis University. Listen to the full episode of Harper Talks and hear her talk about a path that led her to become an apprenticeship talent navigator at Zurich Insurance.
Harper Talks, a co-production between Harper College Radio and Harper Alumni Relations, features Associate Professor of Mass Communication Brian Shelton in conversation with Harper alumni about the role that Harper played in their lives. You can listen to past episodes of Harper Talks on Harper’s website, WHCM, and on all podcast streaming services, including Spotify and Apple.
