Professional Experience

Professor Norm Bemis brings nearly three decades of dedicated fire service experience to Harper College. He served 25 years with the Palatine Fire Department, moving through the ranks from Firefighter/Paramedic to Division Chief of Training. Over his 29 years in the fire service, he was responsible for leading firefighter development, overseeing training programs, and advancing firefighter safety and operational readiness.

Current Role at Harper

Professor Bemis serves as the Program Coordinator for the Fire Science Technology and Emergency and Disaster Management programs at Harper College. In this role, he leads curriculum development, coordinates partnerships with area fire departments, and prepares the next generation of fire service and emergency management professionals.

Professional Affiliations and Service

Professor Bemis is an advisor on the UL Fire Safety Academy Training Advisory Committee and holds certifications from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He remains active in professional development and leadership within the fire service community.
