Communities of Practice: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Community of Practice at Harper College?

The Communities of Practice (CoP) initiative is a faculty-driven shared learning opportunity that aims to foster collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement in teaching and learning across our institution.

Etienne Wenger (1991) described Communities of Practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” This shared passion is at the heart of a Community of Practice.

What is the purpose of a Community of Practice?

CoPs provide a structured space for faculty shared learning, innovation, and sharing.

Who can participate in a Community of Practice?

Participation is open to all employees of the institution, including faculty, staff, and administrators. However, only faculty members (full-time or part-time) are eligible for funding support related to conference attendance and travel through the CoP program

Can a faculty member join more than one CoP?

Yes. Faculty may participate in multiple CoPs, but they may receive conference travel funding from only one CoP per academic year. This helps ensure fair access to professional development resources across the campus.

What types of expenses are covered by CoP funding?

Allowable expenses include:

  • Professional development conference attendance, books, and materials
  • Guest speakers or consultants
  • Event materials and refreshments (within specified limits)
  • All expenditures must be pre-approved and directly tied to CoP goals

Are food and refreshments allowed during meetings?

Yes. CoPs may request funds for refreshments for in-person meetings or events. Alcohol is not funded, and there are limits on per person spending for refreshments at events.

What are the requirements for each CoP?

Each CoP must participate in:

  • A mid-year progress check-in with the Academy
  • A presentation for the annual Faculty Showcase (“The Share-Ousel”)
  • At least one shareable artifact (e.g., curriculum, toolkit, resource)

Can CoP funds be reallocated during the year?

Yes. Unused funds for a specific purpose (e.g., conference/travel) may be reallocated within a COP to another specific purpose (e.g., books/materials) based on performance, emerging needs, or special opportunities. Requests must be submitted to and approved by the Dean of Teaching & Learning.

How are themes for CoPs selected?

Themes are proposed by applicants during the annual application process. CoPs should reflect shared learning interests that support a vibrant culture of teaching and learning.

Can staff or administrators participate in a CoP?

Yes. CoPs are primarily intended for full-time and adjunct faculty, but staff may be a member of a CoP where appropriate for the topic.

Who can I contact with additional questions?

Please reach out to the Academy Director for all inquiries regarding starting or supporting a CoP and the Dean of Teaching and Learning  for support with budgeting requests
