Digital Accessibility

What is Accessible Content?

Accessible content involves the creation and provision of accessible instructional content and course materials to address the variable abilities of all learners.

Document Accessibility

Provided below are simple formatting techniques and solutions for ensuring your instructional materials are accessible to all learners.

Multimedia Accessibility

Any instructional content or media should also be made accessible for students with disabilities that may make use of assistive technology. Below are some recommendations for how to improve the accessibility of multimedia.

Audio

Provide a transcript for any audio tracks or podcast materials. A transcript is an adequate accommodation for those students who may be unable to hear audio content.

Video

Video used for instructional purposes should be captioned for all students. Providing captions and transcription of course-related videos is one way to help create an equitable learning environment for all students.

If using video in your instructional materials, choose videos that are already captioned. Harper College’s Library subscribes to several video streaming repositories that have captioned video in which you can link to a whole or segments of video, many that also have an interactive transcript that can be searched and viewed while playing.

Open Educational Resources (OER) Accessibility

OER content has the potential to democratize education by removing barriers to learning. To achieve this accessibility issues to digital content and ebooks must be addressed. For more information on standards and techniques for OER Accessibility please download and refer to the following checklist (Microsoft Word document).

Harper College has an institutional license for Pressbooks, an open source publishing solution for authoring, adapting or remixing open content for instruction. H5P can also be integrated with Pressbooks and Blackboard to provide interactive experiences within a Pressbooks ebook that may be used for your course. For more about Pressbooks, H5P accessibility and it’s integration with Blackboard and the benefits of accessible OER, please review the following resources below.
