Harper College offices are currently closed for an all-campus meeting. Offices will reopen shortly after noon to serve students.
Aira is an app that provides on-demand, remote visual interpreting for the blind and low vision community to enhance their independence and efficiency. Aira is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. You never need to make a reservation—just call whenever you need assistance.
You will be able to use Aira anywhere on Harper College's main campus, the Learning and Career center (LCC) and the Harper Professional Center (HPC). Harper students may qualify for off-campus Aira use. Please contact the Access and Disability Services for more information.
Once you download and open the Aira app, you then press a button, and your phone’s camera will stream a live video to one of Aira’s professional visual interpreters. The visual interpreter can describe in detail callers’ surroundings, narrate, navigate, or read aloud.
You can also use the “Access AI” feature on the bottom menu to upload or take a photo, and then get an instant AI description. Some popular uses of Access AI are taking photos and getting descriptions of printed menus, signs on public transit, and labels.
Visual interpreters are trained professionals who can assist with a broad range of
tasks. They are certified and undergo comprehensive
Aira training to provide immediate information to our users and accomplish tasks as
a team. They work from home, pass a background
check, sign a non-disclosure agreement and go through extensive training on orientation
and mobility. They are not a replacement for a
guide dog or white cane, but an additional feed of visual information.
