Aquatics at Harper College

Harper College Aquatics has offered year-round swim lessons for beginners to advanced swimmers for many years. Now, it's time to renovate our pool and the other facilities in Building M. Starting in December, 2016, Building M, including the pool, will be closed for renovation for a minimum of 18 months. When Building M re-opens, it will be the site for a new swimming program and many other athletic and fitness classes and events. Stay tuned for updates!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: At what age should my child begin to learn how to swim?

A: The Harper Aquatics Parent-Tot program is designed for tots as young as 1. Parent-Tot classes require that a parent is in the pool with the child 100% of the time.

  • The Pre-School Learn to Swim class is for children 3-5 years old with no previous swim experience required.
  • The Learn to Swim program is for students 5-14 years old.

Q: My child is new to the Learn to Swim program or has taken a long break from the program. How do I know which level they are in?

A: Students that are new to our program or returning after a break spend a few minutes at the start of the first class to assess skills so we can accurately place them in the correct level. Individuals that are new to swimming are often placed in level 1.

Q: How is the aquatic program structured?

A: Aquatics classes are offered year-around during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Classes are designed to meet in 6, 7 or 8 week formats depending on the time of year. Class schedules vary, so check the Continuing Education catalog, website, or call 847.925.6300 for specific class information.

Q: When are students assessed and moved up to the next level?

A: Each student is assessed during the last week of each session through a variety of swim skills.  At the end of the session, the student is given a report card that states their progress within the level and whether or not they have passed to the next level.

Q: What are private lessons, and how do I schedule them with an instructor?

A: Private lessons are one-on-one lessons with an instructor. We offer private lessons for both children and adults.

When signing up for a session, we will generally schedule four thirty-minute lessons on different days. If you would prefer lessons that are longer than 30 minutes, you should discuss that with your instructor or the pool manager.

Q: How big is the Harper pool?

A: The Harper pool is separated into two sections by a bulkhead. The first section is 15 yards wide and has a depth of 3-5 feet. It is used during free swim and for training and/or lessons. The second section is is 25 yards wide and slopes to a depth of 13 feet. It is used for lap swimming.
