Education is more than just a pathway to success – it’s a generational force for change. Born to a 17-year-old single mother, Dr. Avis Proctor learned early on the power of perseverance and the role education plays in shaping futures. Raised by her grandmother, Dr. Proctor’s earliest experiences with higher education were shaped by the strong community values instilled in her at a young age. She often sat beside her grandmother in classrooms at their local community college, witnessing firsthand how education could open doors and transform lives.

Now the sixth president of Harper College, Dr. Proctor continues that mission by empowering first-generation college students through the Dr. Avis Proctor Presidential Endowed Scholarship. She understands the unique challenges these students face, from navigating college without family guidance to balancing school with financial responsibilities.

“First-generation college students have hope,” she said. “And that hope keeps them going.”

One of those students is Camryn, a scholarship recipient whose journey embodies the resilience and determination that Dr. Proctor champions. Dr. Proctor hopes this scholarship will continue to open doors for students, just as others once did for her.

“I want the scholarship to do for others what a scholarship did for me,” she shared, reflecting on the support that allowed her to complete her undergraduate degree in just three years. Much like her grandmother, who dedicated her life to teaching and strengthening her community, Dr. Proctor sees her role in education as a way to invest in people, inspire progress and create opportunities for future generations. Through this scholarship, she ensures that students have the chance to achieve their dreams and build brighter futures for themselves and those who follow.
