Coach Eli's Passion Lives on Through Generations

Coach John Eliasik stands with his arms resting on a barbell next to the first recipient of his newly created scholarship.Passion defines John R. Eliasik, known to generations of Harper College students as “Coach Eli,” both in how he lives and how he coached. He believes athletics can provide an outlet and a pathway to purpose, discipline and personal growth.

John began playing football during his junior year of high school, later than many of his peers, but committed himself fully to the game. After an unfocused year at community college and time working in construction, he returned to higher education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. There, after changing majors several times, he found his calling in physical education and safety education, combining his love of football with a desire to teach and mentor others.

During 35 years as Harper’s head football coach, Coach Eli built more than a championship program—he built relationships. A member of the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame and the all-time leader in NJCAA coaching wins, he was known for offering students honest, practical guidance rooted in his own experiences.

His story resonated with Karla Basilio, the inaugural recipient of the Coach John R. Eliasik Scholarship. Karla plans to become a physical education teacher and coach women’s basketball. Like Coach Eli, she discovered her sport later than many others and is determined to turn her passion into a career that helps students grow.

Established in Coach Eli’s honor, the scholarship supports full-time students studying health, wellness, physical education, kinesiology or related fields. Through recipients like Karla, his legacy continues—helping students transform passion into purpose.
