Harper College is closed Friday, July 3, for Independence Day (Observed).
Objective: Ensure responsible use of AI that builds trust, supports learning, and keeps people central to decision-making and innovation. Promote active, critical human engagement and provide training for informed, ethical use.
Objective: Ensure the college is maintaining continuous learning and innovation while collaborating and respecting diverse perspectives.
Objective: To enable college faculty and staff to effectively integrate the following principles while incorporating AI technologies into teaching, administrative tasks, and professional development, ensuring accessible and inclusive environments that prioritize support for all, especially individuals with disabilities, marginalized and underrepresented groups.
| #1 - Cultivate an inclusive and supportive community that provides holistic well-being for everyone. | #2 - Provide innovative and responsive education that addresses the evolving needs of students, the workforce, and our community. | #3 - Achieve organizational excellence by centering mission-aligned initiatives that improve operations, encourage experimentation, and advance sustainability, while upholding the College's core values (RESPECT, INTEGRITY, COLLABORATION, EXCELLENCE) |
|---|---|---|
| Inclusive Design & Access – AI tools and platforms that are designed and/or considered must accommodate individuals with diverse needs and abilities. | Continuous Learning – Promote AI literacy for faculty and staff through ongoing professional development opportunities that foster skepticism, adaptability, and critical evaluation of AI-generated content. | Human-Centered – Use AI to enhance, not replace, human thinking, judgment, and innovation. (RESPECT & EXCELLENCE) |
| Collaboration – Advance the use of AI through inclusive engagement among internal and external stakeholders, valuing diverse perspectives in learning and policy. (Also exemplifies the core values of RESPECT, COLLABORATION, & EXCELLENCE) | Innovation – Drive innovation by researching emerging AI practices, sharing lessons learned, and applying strategies engaging the technology. Explore AI’s role across institutional systems to support informed growth. (Also exemplifies the core value of EXCELLENCE) | Transparency – Clearly disclose when and how AI is used in academic and institutional work. (INTEGRITY) |
| Inclusive Governance & Representation – When making AI related decisions, diverse perspectives must be included in the development, selection, and/or evaluation of AI and policies. | Equitable Participation & Alternatives – Assure individuals have equitable opportunities to engage with AI. Where AI tools are used, equally effective alternative methods of participation must be available for individuals who cannot or choose not to use AI. | Reflection – Engage in critical reflection when deciding whether and to what extent to use generative AI, considering where it adds value and aligns with institutional goals. (INTEGRITY & EXCELLENCE) |
| Academic Freedom – Support faculty autonomy in deciding how and whether to use AI in course design, delivery, and assignments. (Also exemplifies the core values of RESPECT & EXCELLENCE) | Integrity – Use AI in ways that respect disciplinary norms and uphold academic and professional standards - supporting learning, development, and productivity without compromising honesty or trust, and ensuring that any material used or uploaded complies with copyright and intellectual property laws. (INTEGRITY) | |
| Empowering Individuals – Understand that AI's value is context-dependent. Draw on the unique judgment, creativity, and insight inherent to human expertise when deciding between AI and non-AI approaches, balancing efficiency with learning, equity, and integrity. (Also exemplifies the core values of RESPECT & EXCELLENCE) | Accuracy – Verify and fact-check AI-generated output before using. (INTEGRITY & EXCELLENCE) | |
| Bias Prevention & Mitigation – Individuals should reflect on how the bias in AI can lead to discriminatory outcomes, particularly those that may disproportionately affect individuals with disabilities, underrepresented, and/or marginalized groups. | Equity – Actively seek diverse perspectives and critically examine AI outputs to identify and reduce bias, recognizing that bias may be embedded and difficult to detect. (RESPECT, COLLABORATION, & EXCELLENCE) | |
| Privacy – Respect and protect sensitive students, employees, and institutional data. (INTEGRITY) | ||
| Respect for Individual Autonomy – College policies must respect the autonomy of individuals in choosing whether and how to engage with AI tools. Participation in AI-related activities is guided by alignment with clearly defined learning or operational outcomes. |
AI Disclosure: AI was used in the process of creating the initial draft of language for these principles, which was then reviewed and revised by the taskforce members.
