Our first stop at the Harare Kopje provided a glimpse at the expansive layout of the city, which was first established as Fort Salisbury by British business mogul, imperialist, and politician Cecil Rhodes in 1890. This highest point of Harare, at approximately 4,800 feet, provides a wonderful panorama of what is now a populated and built-up city, and conjures images of what was then open grassland. Read More

This day took most of us into the Virunga Mountains, a chain of Western Rift Valley volcanoes that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for a first-hand experience with the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Considered a biodiversity hotspot, portions of the Virungas are protected by contiguous trans-frontier parks in Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park), DRC (Virunga National Park), and Uganda (Mgahinga Gorilla National Park). The early morning mist shrouded our vehicles as we rolled past the town of Kabale headed for the Rwanda border about 20 miles away. We completed the border formalities without a hitch just as the fog banks were beginning to rise around us. Read More

After spending nearly a week in and around urban areas in central Uganda, we headed to the southwestern part of the country. Several faculty visited Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), which we had learned about through the paper “Developing Astronomy in Uganda” in the proceedings of a 2011 International Astronomical Union Symposium. Tuesday brought us to Kampala, to the Uganda Museum, and to one of our most anticipated destinations – Uganda’s center of higher education and East Africa’s oldest, Makerere University. Our plan was to form working relationships with members of Uganda’s academic community whose roles in the university, areas of expertise, and research interests could give us the chance to form partnerships with African colleagues, to the benefit of both institutions’ students and faculty.
