Learn German by living it. Spend your summer experiencing Germany beyond the classroom—using your language skills in everyday life while exploring the people, places, traditions, and ideas that shape German culture. Immersion gives you the opportunity to build your confidence in German while experiencing firsthand the country’s art, architecture, music, history, food, sustainability efforts, and contemporary life.
But this program is about more than improving your German. Living and learning in another culture challenges you to see the world—and yourself—from new perspectives. You’ll strengthen skills that matter in college, your career, and an increasingly global workplace, including cross-cultural communication, adaptability, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and independence. Whether you are continuing your German studies or looking for a meaningful way to experience another culture, this program offers the chance to learn, explore, connect, and come home with a new perspective.
Whether you are just beginning German or building on previous language study, your coursework will strengthen your ability to listen, speak, read, and write in German while deepening your understanding of German-speaking cultures. As you progress, you’ll expand your vocabulary, improve pronunciation, develop more complex communication skills, and gain greater confidence and fluency. At the more advanced levels, you’ll use German to engage with everyday life, culture, and current events while developing greater accuracy and ease in conversation.
And here’s what makes studying in Germany different: the learning doesn’t stop when class ends. You’ll have opportunities to put your German into practice as you navigate daily life, interact with local communities, explore cultural and historic sites, and experience the traditions and perspectives you are studying firsthand. Instead of only learning about German language and culture, you’ll be living it, turning everyday experiences into opportunities to communicate, connect, and learn.
No German yet? No problem. Beginning students can start with GER 101, while students with previous German experience can be placed at the appropriate level.
There may be no better classroom for exploring modern Germany than Berlin. As Germany’s capital and a vibrant international city, Berlin brings together history, politics, art, culture, and people from around the world. Its unique “East meets West” story gives students the opportunity to experience firsthand many of the places, perspectives, and events that have shaped Germany from the 20th century to today.
Taught in English, GER 230 explores German history, political institutions, economic development, literature, art, and contemporary culture, while also introducing the broader German-speaking world. Living and learning in Berlin allows you to take those topics beyond the textbook: explore the city, engage with different cultures and perspectives, and think critically about how Germany’s past continues to influence life today.
