Harper Experience Day

October 23 - 29, 2021

Roll up your sleeves and explore the sciences, math, technology, liberal arts and other fields. Experience fields of study and careers through events and activities geared toward students of all ages. This year features:

  • In-person Activities
  • Virtual Activities
  • Self-paced Activities

In-person Activities

Limited capacity in-person events will be hosted on Harper’s main campus. Registration is required. Walk-in participants will not be accepted. Participants must wear a mask and follow all COVID safety guidelines.

Saturday, October 23
10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m.
Karl G. Henize Observatory (Building O)

 

View the sun with Harper’s astronomy faculty through solar telescopes. Compete in the solar system scavenger hunt using Harper’s scale model of the solar system and learn about the astronomy program.

*This activity will take place outside the Karl G. Henize Observatory. Dress for the weather and be prepared to walk for the scavenger hunt. Masks are required for all participants. Registration is required. Walk ups will not be permitted.

Grade level: K-12th

Capacity limit: 20 people per session

Come to the Harper Makerspace to design and make your very own fidget spinner!! It's one of the most crazy-popular and FUN gadgets in recent memory!! You will design your own spinner, cut it on our laser cutters, and then put it all together in under an hour. We can't wait to see what you create!

*Due to capacity limitations, only participating students will be allowed in the classroom. Parents will have a designated area where they can wait. The activity will last 45 minutes. Parents must stay in Building H while their child is in the activity.

Grade level: 5th - 8th

Capacity limit: 10 students per session

Foglia Foundation Health and Recreation Center (Building M)

 

Run, crawl, shake, shimmy and wobble your way through an obstacle course at Harper’s Health and Recreation Center. Take a few trial runs through the course before testing your abilities to see if you can set the quickest time for the day!

*Students should dress comfortably and be prepared to move. Parents will be able to watch the competition from the bleachers.

Grade level: K-8th

Capacity limit: 20 students per session

 

Virtual Activities and Self-paced Activities

Kits include supplies and instructions for self-paced activities as well as supplies for virtual activities. Unfortunately, we have reached our quantity limit and kit registration is closed. If you have already registered for your kit, you may pick it up at your selected location starting October 20. Some virtual activities can be done with supplies from home. Tuesday, October 26
4 p.m. (45 minutes)
Grade level: 1st – 5th

 

Have you ever made a giraffe with cardboard cut with a laser beam? The cardboard puzzle pieces in your activity supply kit were created in Harper’s Makerspace and Entrepreneur Center. Follow along as our instructor shows you how to put your puzzle together and talks about how they used a laser beam to cut the pieces. Add some googly eyes and color the pieces. Make your giraffe unique. You will have a blast!

Wednesday, October 27
4 p.m. (30 minutes)
Grade level: K-4th

 

Halloween is right around the corner. In this activity, our Make Shop instructors will show you how to design your own trick or treat bag. Make a spider web, witches’ hat or a spooky ghost. Use the supplies provided in the Harper activity kit or use your own.

Supplies:

  • Small tote bag
  • Felt sheets (black, white, orange)
  • Plain paper (1 piece)
  • Scissors (not provided)
  • Glue (not provided)

Wednesday, October 27
4:30 p.m. (30 minutes)
Grade level: 5th – 8th

 

No jack-o-lantern for Halloween? No problem. Join our Make Shop instructors and make paper chain pumpkins. Decorate your locker or bedroom. Use the supplies provided in the Harper activity kit or use your own.

Supplies:

  • Orange Paper
  • Black Paper
  • Green Paper
  • Glue (not provided)
  • Scissors (not provided)

Thursday, October 28
4 p.m. (45 minutes)
Grade level: 5th – 8th

 

Create your own zippy bot in minutes! Bristlebots are a fun way to learn about basic engineering, motor, circuits and principals of balance. Join your instructor from Harper’s Makerspace and Entrepreneur Center and build your own mini robot. The supplies for this activity are included in the Harper activity kit.

Be sure to register for your Harper activity supply kit so you have supplies for all the virtual activities as well as our self-paced activities. Quantities are limited.

Event Guidelines

Masks must be worn for all in-person events (indoors and outdoors) regardless of vaccination status. Gaiters or valved masks are not permitted. Masks must be worn over your mouth and nose. Attendees should also maintain six-foot social distancing. For more information on coming to campus, please visit our advisory page.
