Poverty Simulation

During Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 12-20, 2022), 108 health career students from seven different health career programs (NUR, DHY, RAD, DIT, PTA, MTP, and MOA), and 24 faculty and staff participated together in the Community Action Poverty Simulation held in the Wojcik Conference Center. The students were grouped into families and worked together to provide shelter, food, and other basic necessities by accessing various community resources, run by the faculty, throughout four 15-minute “weeks.” The activity was followed by an interprofessional discussion about how poverty affects patients in our community and the struggles they face accessing and affording healthcare. Non-perishable goods and personal hygiene products were collected and donated to Hawks Care at the event.
