Lifelong Learning Institute to hold annual open house

Imagine an experiential- and discussion-based learning program for mature adults that offers fresh, relevant and fun courses in a seminar format. That means no exams or homework – just spirited discussions, hands-on activities and new connections.

The Lifelong Learning Institute (ages 50+) at Harper College provides mature adults with an opportunity to do just that through an array of exciting and engaging courses.

The community is invited to learn more at LLI’s annual meet and greet information session from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, at the Wojcik Conference Center, room W218, on Harper’s main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine.

The information session will feature brief instructor presentations about classes offered in the upcoming semester. Attendees will be able to collect handouts, ask questions about courses that spark their interest and enjoy refreshments.

Now in its 17th year, LLI provides fun and fresh continuing education opportunities for adults ages 50 and older with about 1,000 students registering each year. LLI offers more than 200 short-term programs about a variety of subjects including the arts, books, cooking, current events, fitness, gardening, history, music, travel and more.

Starting this year, the program will feature evening courses for those who are not available during daytime hours.

Cathy Gilman, a returning LLI student, speaks highly of instructor Laura Ehrke’s Cozy Mystery Book Club.

“There were details I would have completely missed if it wasn't for Laura teaching and my fellow students' observations,” Gilman, of Arlington Heights, said.

Ehrke will be teaching The News Panel Lunch Club, a course aimed at teaching readers how to distinguish between real and fake news, during the fall session. She will be one of several instructors present at the information session, which also will preview courses such as Chicago: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; Experience the Nature of Antarctica; and Plant-Based Eating – Is It Worth It.
