Bystander Intervention

Bystander Intervention Training is an educational workshop that teaches students and employees the necessary tools to prevent and safely intervene when bias, harassment, potential violence or other problematic behaviors occur in various environments and situations. The workshop aims to empower students and employees to help address and prevent harassment, discrimination and violence from occurring in everyday environments such as classrooms or workplaces.

Goals of the workshop include:

  • Raising awareness of helping behaviors
  • Increase an individual’s motivation to help by understanding personal and cultural barriers
  • Learn various bystander intervention strategies and skills to safely intervene in emergency and non-emergency situations
  • Develop an increased confidence when responding to problems or concerns by practicing bystander intervention skills
  • Improve the well-being of self and surrounding environments and communities by helping reduce violence

With the right tools, understanding, and motivation, bystanders can intervene and stop inappropriate behavior before it reaches elevated levels, including those of unlawful harassment or discrimination. In turn, bystander intervention training can help create safer and more inclusive environments and communities for everyone.

Workshops are generally held at least once per semester in both fall and spring semesters. Registered students and employees will receive an email with further information and a web link to join the virtual training after registering.  Additionally, campus groups, classes, departments or organizations may request to schedule stand-alone training sessions.
