State Seal of Biliteracy

The State Seal of Biliteracy (SSB) is a high school program that recognizes students who have attained an advanced level of proficiency in speaking, writing, and reading one or more languages in addition to English.

Students that have earned the SSB while in high school can receive up to 8 hours of Harper College's "Elementary I" and "Elementary II" foreign language course credit if the applicable language course is offered at the College. For example, a student who has earned the SSB in Spanish would receive SPA101 (4 credit hour course) and SPA102 (4 credit hour course) from Harper College. Please note that duplicate credit will not be awarded.

Follow these steps for the State Seal of Biliteracy:

Step 1. Apply to the College.
Step 2. Acquire an official high school transcript. PLEASE NOTE: Your official high school transcript must have the Seal on it indicating the language you have shown proficiency in. If your transcript needs to be sent through the mail, please have it addressed to:

Step 3. Once the official score report is received by the College, applicable course credits will be awarded. Credits earned from the State Seal of Biliteracy do not affect a student's grade point average.
