Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Yes, tutoring is free for all currently enrolled Harper students across a variety of subjects.

For community members, tutoring services are available through the Community Tutoring Center (CTC) for a small fee.

Anyone studying for the ALEKS Math Placement Test can receive free tutoring at our Developmental Math Center, regardless of their student status at Harper.

Yes, students enrolled in programs through the University Center are eligible for tutoring in courses that are comparable to those offered at Harper, mostly at the 100- or 200-level.

Limited tutoring may be available during breaks between semesters. For more information, please email us at asc@harpercollege.edu.

Booking & Cancellation Policies

Each appointment is 50 minutes. Exceptions may apply based on tutor recommendations or if you're registered with Access & Disability Services (ADS).

Students can have one appointment per day per area and up to two appointments booked at a time. Additional appointments can be booked after completing one.

Yes, you are welcome to do drop-in in addition to your scheduled appointments.

If you do not arrive within 15 minutes of your appointment start time and haven’t informed us, it will be marked as a 'no show.' If you have multiple no shows, your ability to make future appointments will be restricted.

There are no penalties for cancellation, so please call, chat online, email us, or stop by to let us know that you will not be able to make your appointment. We can then make that appointment available to another student.

You can cancel your appointment at any time without penalty by calling 847.925.6539, chatting online, emailing us at asc@harpercollege.edu, or stopping by in person in building F, room 110.

After your tutoring session, you can request proof of attendance by stopping by the front desk to have your session attendance report either printed or emailed to you. Alternatively, you can also request this documentation via email by contacting us at asc@harpercollege.edu.

Tutoring Session Details

Tutors can clarify points from lectures, labs, discussions, or assigned readings. Tutors will show students how to become independent learners; however, tutors cannot complete homework for students, grade assignments, or help with tests/quizzes.

Bring any materials you have, such as your laptop, syllabus, textbook, notes, assignment sheet, readings.

Yes, you can work with a tutor at any point in the assignment process. It's not necessary to have completed your assignment before seeking tutoring assistance.

Appointments are scheduled for specific times, while drop-in allow students to get help without a prior appointment, depending on tutor availability.

In-person and online tutoring sessions are designed to be interactive, so email submissions for corrections are generally not accepted. Tutors work with you directly during appointments to help you improve your work.

Online Appointments and Drop-In Tutoring

Tutors will send the link to your Harper email before your appointment begins.

If you haven’t received the link within the first 5 minutes of the appointment, please notify us by calling us at 847.925.6539 or emailing the asc@harpercollege.edu.

Online drop-in sessions are available for the Writing Center and select Tutoring Center subjects. To join:

  1. Click on Live Chat to start chatting with the Front Desk.
  2. Provide your Harper ID and specify the course you need assistance with.
  3. Click the provided link in the chat to join the session.

Study Spaces

The center offers a variety of study environments including individual quiet areas, dedicated study tables, computers, and study rooms.

Study rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To use a room, please provide your Harper ID at the front desk upon arrival.

Time limits may be imposed during busy periods to accommodate more students.

Yes, study rooms can be used for group projects. Please maintain a reasonable volume and adhere to the rules posted in each room.

Food and drinks are permitted in the study spaces. We ask that you clean up after yourselves and be considerate of other students using the space.

Yes, there are multiple printing stations located throughout the center. Instructions for uploading and printing documents are available at each station. If you need help or have any questions, please ask the front desk for assistance.
