Celebrating the Launch of the Center for Global Education and Engagement (CGEE)

We’re excited to announce the launch of the Center for Global Education and Engagement (CGEE), a major milestone in advancing inclusive, transformative global learning at Harper College. CGEE brings together the Office of International Education and the Office of International Students to create a unified hub that expands study abroad, strengthens globally themed programming, and provides dedicated support for our international students. As faculty and staff, you gain streamlined access to program development support, curricular resources, and partnership opportunities; and students will benefit from clearer pathways to global experiences, integrated advising, and more equitable access to intercultural learning on campus and abroad.

Mission & Vision: Global Learning for All

Guided by our mission to empower Harper’s community to thrive in an interconnected world, CGEE advances equitable opportunities, intercultural collaboration, and innovative partnerships that help students, faculty, and staff grow as globally minded leaders. The Center envisions Harper as a national model for accessible global learning—where every learner can engage responsibly, inclusively, and with purpose. Housed in the Liberal Arts North Division Office, CGEE is led by Dr. Kathleen Gorski, Associate Provost of Curriculum and Instruction, with Dr. Richard Johnson serving as the inaugural Director. Together, they will champion initiatives that integrate global perspectives across the curriculum, elevate student support, and catalyze impactful collaborations on and off campus.

Efficiency & Impact: One Coordinated Hub

By merging teams and resources, CGEE streamlines processes—from study abroad planning and risk management to international student services—reducing duplication and accelerating service delivery. New and continuing roles (including Global Mobility Coordinator, International Student Coordinator, and a forthcoming Global Programs & Administrative Specialist) will enable faster program execution, clearer communication, and one-stop support for faculty proposals, student advising, and cocurricular events. The result: more responsive services, simplified workflows, and greater reach, so we can scale global opportunities while maintaining the personalized guidance our community expects.

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming announcements about new initiatives, funding opportunities, and ways to get involved. If you have any ideas for us, contact CGEE to collaborate on courses, programs, or partnerships that put global learning into action. And be sure to check out (or better yet, bookmark!) our website: https://www.harpercollege.edu/CGEE

Other Workshops

Join our Virtual Exchange Workshops this spring and learn how to design and run meaningful, technology-enabled global learning experiences for your students. In two engaging, hands-on sessions (each approximately two hours), you’ll learn how to connect with international colleagues, design impactful intercultural interactions, and confidently facilitate virtual exchanges from start to finish. We’ll explore Virtual Intercultural Pedagogy (VIP), a flexible, curriculum-based approach that uses accessible technologies like Zoom, Teams, email, and collaborative digital tools to foster intercultural communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and other essential 21st century workforce skills. Whether you’re new to virtual exchange or ready to deepen an existing partnership, these workshops will equip you with practical strategies, ready-to-use activities, and assessment-aligned designs that seamlessly integrate global learning into your courses.

This GEC will be a continuation of our fall 2025 GEC (Global Competence in Action: Integrating Global Perspectives into Professional Practice) and provide faculty, staff, and administrators with a more focused academic exploration of the Middle East/Southwest Asia and North Africa (MENA/SWANA) region, including its historical development, cultural diversity, and contemporary social and political challenges. Drawing on the theme of movement and migration as a lens for understanding the region, the program will examine how displacement, coexistence, shared knowledge, and exchange have shaped the region’s complex historical and cultural landscape and continue to influence our interconnected world today.

Through guided readings, expert-led discussions, and collaborative analysis, participants will engage critically with issues such as colonialism, modernity, and intercultural coexistence across the Maghreb and Mashriq. Participants will develop practical strategies to integrate MENA perspectives into courses, programs, and campus initiatives—fostering learning environments that promote critical global awareness, intercultural understanding, and inclusive engagement with complex international issues. Faculty participants will also consider implications for global learning and curriculum development across disciplines.

By the end of the spring semester, participants will have gained deeper knowledge of the MENA region, developed tools to address bias and promote nuanced perspectives, and identified strategies to integrate regional and global understandings into teaching, programming, and institutional initiatives.

The dates for this program are Jan 30, Feb 13, Mar 6, Apr 17, and May 1 from 9 am to 12 pm. If you are interested in participating in this program, please register using the following form: https://harpercollege.formstack.com/forms/gec_bringing_world_harper

Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in the Study Abroad Workshop! We’re grateful for your enthusiasm and interest in learning more about the process and best practices for developing faculty-led programs.

Due to challenges in identifying a common meeting time, our office is working toward creating an on-demand version of the workshop. In the meantime, we will be sharing workshop materials directly with those who complete the interest form.

Other Professional Development Opportunities

HumberEducators and academic leaders are invited to participate in Critical AI Literacy for Transforming Teaching and Learning, a Global Summer Seminar in Toronto sponsored by ICISP in collaboration with Humber Polytechnic. This professional development experience is designed to build both foundational and applied competencies in generative AI. Participants will explore how AI is reshaping teaching, learning, and assessment, while critically engaging with its ethical, social, and pedagogical implications. The program is ideal for educators ready to thoughtfully integrate AI into their practice, academic leaders shaping institutional AI adoption, and professionals interested in responsible and ethical AI use.

The seminar leads to a micro-credential in Teaching and Learning with Generative AI and includes four modules—Foundations of Generative AI, Critical Engagement with AI, Generative AI in Education, and Generative AI and Learning Design—culminating in a problem-based capstone project. Participants will apply AI tools to a real pedagogical challenge while ensuring authentic learning and alignment with learning outcomes. Hosted at Humber’s scenic Lakeshore Campus, just 30 minutes from downtown Toronto, the experience also offers opportunities to explore one of the world’s most multicultural cities, with optional excursions such as Niagara Falls and a Toronto Blue Jays game.

When: July 13–22, 2026

Where: Humber Politechnic - Toronto, Canada

Program Fee (includes 42h instruction, lunch on weekdays, opening and closing reception, insurance, micro-credential/certiciate)

Options w/ bed and breakfast (11 nights + breakfast): $2,095

Option w/o housing: $1,525

Faculty are invited to apply for visiting faculty and faculty facilitator opportunities abroad, designed for those interested in leading and supporting groups of students overseas without teaching a course. These short-term professional development roles allow faculty to accompany students on study abroad programs, support their transition to a new cultural and academic environment, and serve as a resource during travel, orientation, and on-site activities. Visiting faculty gain first-hand experience engaging with international partner institutions while contributing to student success, well-being, and intercultural learning.

Responsibilities typically include participating in pre-departure orientations, traveling with students, assisting with on-site logistics and cultural adjustment, coordinating with host institutions or program partners, and providing general advisement and support throughout the program. Compensation and logistics vary by location but commonly include airfare support, housing or housing stipends, and salary arrangements through the faculty member’s home institution. These opportunities are ideal for faculty seeking meaningful global engagement, hands-on international experience, and professional growth—without the responsibility of delivering academic instruction abroad.

More details about these opportunities will be highlighted at the Summit. Applications open in the Fall.

Building Global Capacity for Student Success and Workforce Readiness

This January, the newly launched Center for Global Education and Engagement (CGEE) advanced Harper’s strategic priorities by strengthening faculty capacity to deliver high-impact global learning aligned with student success, workforce preparation, and institutional partnerships. Through a five-day immersive faculty development program in Costa Rica, participants gained practical expertise in experiential learning design, ethical community engagement, health and safety, risk management, and reflective practice—core elements of high-quality, faculty-led study abroad programs. Six faculty from four disciplines collaborated with local nonprofit organizations, family-owned agricultural partners, and the National University of Costa Rica to strengthen expertise in experiential learning, ethical engagement, and program design. Faculty are now developing discipline-specific global learning projects that will expand student access to international experiences, build employer-relevant skills, and support the growth of sustainable, partnership-driven study abroad programs.
