Hospitality Management Faculty

Dr. Roy started as an adjunct hospitality instructor in Fall 2020. Prior to coming to Harper, she worked for Purdue University Global as Hospitality Course Lead. Jan worked in the industry for 20 years, serving in senior management positions at Sheraton Hotel, McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau and the USDA Graduate School. She holds a bachelor's degree in hospitality management, A Master of Science in Human Resource Management, and a PhD in Organization and Management.  Dr Roy was promoted to Coordinator of the Hospitality program in 2022 and teaches all hotel management courses.

Maryann Ariza is a dedicated Hospitality professional and a proud Harper alumna. She graduated Cum Laude from Harper College's Hospitality Management program and is a Phi Theta Kappa Member. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Roosevelt University. With over 15 years of experience in restaurants, hotels, B2B sales, and food distribution, Maryann brings a well-rounded industry perspective into the classroom. 

As an educator, Maryann’s mission is to empower students with the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to thrive in the hospitality industry. Her approach to teaching is grounded in mentorship, real-world insights, and a deep belief in the power of personal and professional transformation through education.  Returning to Harper as an adjunct instructor, she’s thrilled to help shape the next generation of hospitality leaders.

Barry Carlson's teaching approach blends course content with industry examples and current events, encouraging students to evaluate their own and others' experiences to apply in their education and career progression. Carlson graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a Marketing specialization, earned Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) certification from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, and Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) certification from the Convention Liaison Council.

Candace Nicole Davis holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Jackson State University, an MBA in International Business, and a Culinary Diploma from Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. She taught and helped build a culinary program within Atlanta Public Schools and served as an Adjunct Professor of Hospitality at Morris Brown College for three years. She is also a Private Chef, Chef Instructor, food blogger, and the owner of Prettie Palate LLC. Her culinary focus emphasizes plant-based, vegetarian, and pescatarian cuisine, while teaching students to prepare flavorful, health-conscious meals. She is passionate about culinary education, workforce readiness, and student-centered learning.

Heather Johnson graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a B.A. in Psychology.  She also received a Culinary Certificate from Kendall College and an M.B.A. from Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois.  Heather has held various hospitality management positions, including general manager, wine director, and sales/event coordinator at both independently and corporately run restaurants.

Zoie earned a bachelor's degree in Food Beverage Industry Management and an associate's degree in Baking & Pastry Arts at Johnson & Wales Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She began her professional career at the Renaissance Hotel as a baker in the banquets department.  Her hope is to create a learning environment where students can learn to love the art of cake decorating as she does. She is committed to helping students grow in their skills and techniques.

Heather Larson (CMP, CDME, President & CEO of Meet Chicago Northwest) is a seasoned hospitality leader with several years of sales management experience at upscale Chicago hotels, including the Allegro Hotel, White Hall Hotel, Drake Hotel, and the Fairmont Hotel.  She joined the team at Meet Chicago Northwest in 2010 as a sales Manager.  She quickly became Director of Sales, and she was named President & CEO in June 2021.  Heather serves on the Board of Directors of the Schaumburg Business Association and is a past Chairman of the Board for the International Association of Exhibitions and Events Midwest Chapter.  She is also a mayoral appointee to the Arlington Heights Economic Alliance, Rolling Meadows Economic Development Commission and the Schaumburg Business Development Commission.

Pili Rios has been an educator for over 30 years. She has been an adjunct culinary arts instructor at Harper College for over 20 years. She started cooking at the early age of 8 years old in the family kitchen. Cooking side by side with her mother, she soon developed a love for cooking. She decided to become an educator so she could inspire students to learn to bake and cook.  Pili has received silver and gold medals in ACF culinary competitions. She received an AA in Hospitality Management- Culinary Arts from Elgin Community College, a bachelor's degree in management and leadership, and a master's degree in organizational leadership, both from Judson University.
