The Wind Symphony is a wind and percussion ensemble of 30 to 70 players that is open to students (regardless of major), faculty, staff, and community members. The group's flexible instrumentation allows for performing a variety of music written for wind ensemble, symphonic or concert band, and chamber winds.
Rehearsals are every Thursday during fall and spring semesters, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., with two performances a year (December and May) in the Performing Arts Center. The group sometimes tours. (Audition required.)
The Chamber Winds ensemble also has flexible instrumentation and typically ranges from eight to fifteen players. Founded by Department Chair Gregory Clemons, the Chamber Winds is one of Harper College's Ensembles-in-Residence, comprised of faculty from the Department of Music and other professional musicians from the Chicago area. (Audition or conductor approval required.)
Auditions
Auditions for membership in the Wind Symphony and for part assignments in each section
occur at the beginning of fall and spring semesters. Auditions consist of the three
components:
1. Required audition etude excerpt(s) for your instrument:
2. Two (s) major scales selected at random from the following keys on your instrument:
C, F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, G, and D. Each scale should be played two octaves (as
appropriate), ascending and descending. All scales should be tongued.
3. At the discretion of the conductor, sight reading excerpts from the upcoming season's repertoire.
